Becoming A Successful Choreographer

Why is it important to learn how to choreograph?

As dancers it is vital that we are not just able to dance but choreograph as well. Even if you do not intend to become a choreographer there may be instances where the choreographer asks the performer to make up some choreography which is why you need to learn the skills to enable you to choreograph.

What makes a successful choreographer?

Trial and Error

Don’t be afraid to start again! You do not have to keep everything you make up. If it’s not working change, it slightly or make something new. When choreographing it can be hard to let go of something you spent so much time on however sometimes it’s for the best to let it go. However, this process can be rewarding as it enables you to grow as a choreographer.

Using more than one technique to choreograph

Most choreographers will try and use more than one technique to get their final piece. Have a look at the suggested choreographers below to find out which techniques they use.

Finding inspiration

You will not always find that inspiration will just come to you. So how do you get inspiration? Research!

·         Make a mind map – this can include literature, pictures, music, material, historical references. You can use your mind map to get ideas. Perhaps you can try out the warm up game we performed in class.

Go out! - go for a walk, visit a museum or visit somewhere relevant to your choreographic topic e.g., if the dance was about the sea, you might go the beach or an aquarium. You never know what you might find!

Use other choreographers' methods!

Martha Graham

Alvin Ailey

Bob Fosse

Mathew Bourne

Look at other pieces of work to get inspired, but this does not mean copy. You may look at one aspect e.g., the way they use space, music, props or costume to help inspire you.
